“More lanes on a highway will actually make gridlock even worse. Ford is taking us down the wrong path. A more expensive, slower, more polluting path.” – Ontario’s Green Party responding to the Ford Government’s idea of building a multi-billion dollar tunnel for more trucks and cars under Highway 401

Ontaro Premier Doug Ford plans for the province’s transportation would be laughable if they weren’t so potentially costly and dangerous.
Ford’s harebrained ideas to solve traffic haven’t stopped at ripping up bike lanes. I’m sure you’ve heard that last week Ford had the ridiculous suggestion to tunnel underneath Highway 401 to add even more lanes of traffic.
There’s many reasons why this suggestion is absurd The astronomical cost, the decades it would take to build – not to mention the alternatives.
Think about what the estimated $60 billion that could be spent on: building much-needed housing, public transit, or improving our hospitals.
Needless to say, opposition has been overwhelming, from experts to community groups.
It may be crazy but it also speaks to Ford’s priorities. They’re shortsighted and they’re not actually about solving problems or making your life more affordable.
It’s ‘tunnel vision’ at its worst.
Tell Ford his bike lane ban is wrong – (https://secure.gpo.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=201511&qid=105116619)
The solutions to gridlock aren’t some unknowable mystery: If you want traffic to be better, give people affordable options beyond always having to drive. Build transit people are excited to hop on, make biking feel safe and reliable, build communities where people can get around without a car.
More lanes on a highway will actually make gridlock even worse. Ford is taking us down the wrong path. A more expensive, slower, more polluting path.
Ontario Greens are [calling on Ford – (https://secure.gpo.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=201512&qid=105116619) to drop
his plans to oppose bike lanes and tunnel underneath the 401. We’re calling on the government to invest in the modes of transportation that will actually reduce gridlock in Ontario: public transit and bike infrastructure.
We can’t afford anything less.
