Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Now he’s looking at building a multi-billion dollar tunnel to accommodated more trucks and cars under Highway 401 and banning more bike lanes on municipal roads across the province.
This week (Ontario Premier) Doug Ford signaled that his government is declaring war on bike lanes, an idea so profoundly stupid it’s hard to believe it’s real.
At a press conference Ford suggested banning the construction of new bike lanes on major roads and streets to lessen traffic congestion on those thoroughfares.
It is truly an unserious proposal from an unserious government that doesn’t have a plan to tackle gridlock. And not to mention, it’s dangerous.
Forcing people off of a bike and into a car will make traffic even worse. More people driving in our cities is the cause of the congestion that Ford says he’s trying to fight against.

There is no evidence that bike lanes make traffic worse. What does make traffic worse is building communities where residents have no other option but to drive in order to get where they need to go.

Ontario Greens are calling on Ford to drop his war on bike lanes and invest in the modes of transportation that will actually reduce gridlock in Ontario and to legalize housing so people can live in the communities they love.
