Our Healthcare Is In Trouble And Ford Is Making It Worse

A Message from the Green Party of Ontario

Posted August 23rd, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Not content with making lame jokes about our crumbling healthcare system, Doug Ford’s latest announcement will put even more strain on our hospitals.

Last week, Ford mused that overflow patients could be sent to an animal hospital for their CT scans and MRIs. Now he’s proudly announcing the closure of 10 supervised consumption sites across Ontario.

These facilities are vital in combating the drug poisoning crisis that has ballooned on this government’s watch. They allow people to consume drugs under supervised conditions to ensure that they can do so safely and can get emergency care if they need it.

Closing these sites won’t help people to end their drug addictions. It will only mean that more people will die and more will need treatment in a healthcare system that is already strained to breaking point.

The Ford government has starved the public healthcare of funding so that it can sell its privatization agenda. Meanwhile, thousands of nurses have left the public system in search of higher pay and better working conditions, forcing hospitals to pay double or triple for agency nurses to fill the gaps.

And it’s not just nurses. Within the next few years, almost 4.5 million Ontarians will not have a family doctor, putting even more stress on over-stretched hospital emergency rooms.

Our whole healthcare system is falling apart and Ford is joking about it while he adds another bale of straw to the camel’s back.

Ontario Greens are telling Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones](https://secure.gpo.ca/civicrm/mailing/url?u=201072&qid=103428499) enough with the jokes and the creeping privatization of healthcare. Get to work fixing the public healthcare system we all depend on.
