James Baldwin, on the cover of Time Magazine in May, 1963Thirty-seven years after American-born James Baldwin’s death in 1987, his books and so much of what he had to say about racial and social justice remain as relevant and as well read today.

One of James Baldwin’s lines, written in 1963, that often comes to mind for this reporter and commentary in this age of climate crisis reads as follows –

“God Gave Noah The Rainbow Sign, No More Water, The Fire Next Time.”

Tragically, enough of us chose not the head the warning.
