The Heat Is On – And We’re Not Ready

There’s no mistaking it, we’re having an unusually hot summer this year.

The recent heat wave across Ontario ratcheted temperatures up to the 40s factoring in humidity.

Our global addiction to fossil fuels will make these types of extreme heat events more and more frequent. By 2080 Ontario is projected to have between 55 to 60 days above 30 degrees (we currently average 16).

The Ford government has left us woefully unprepared for future heat waves.

Extreme heat events bring a whole host of negative impacts, but for seniors and people with underlying health conditions they can be deadly.

There have been more than 1,000 reported heat related deaths in Canada in the last 15 years.

That’s why Ontario Greens came up with a plan.

In May, Ontario Greens’ leader Mike Schreiner brought forward a plan to prepare Ontario for extreme heat and protect Ontarians from the negative health effects associated with it.

Our plan includes ensuring access to cooling in all rental households and congregate settings, increasing access to cooling centres, strengthening protections for workers and bolstering clean back-up power generation and storage.

Ontario isn’t prepared for the future of extreme heat. We’re calling on the Ford government to implement our extreme heat plan to protect Ontarians from these rising summer temperatures.
