Here is to a happy and peaceful Fourth of July to all of our American neighbours and friends, including all of those who have continued to visit Niagara At Large and provide us with news and their views over the years.

I continue to be humbled by the number of readers we have in the Buffalo, N.Y. area and other parts of the United States.

These days, I also join many of you and many of my fellow Canadians in sharing concern and fear over what might happen to your democracy and to your relationship with long-time friends and allies like Canada if Donald Trump wins another term as president.

As Timothy Snyder, a Yale University history professor and author of the best-selling pocket book ‘On Tyranny’ recently said so starkly; “Unless Trump loses, America ends.”

 “Our enemies (i.e. the current leaders of Russia, China and North Korea) know this. Which is why they all, without exception, support Trump and we have no excuse not to know this,” he  continued. And once we know it we can act. Each of us doing what we can, trusting one another, making contact.”

“We can do this,” Snyder concluded. “If we each do what we can, this republic will go on, and this republic will get better.”

Amen to that.

And with that, I will repeat a call to all of our American friends and neighbours that I have posted before on this site – In this coming November election, make sure that you and everyone you can engage with in your neighbourhoods and communities to go to the polls and vote for freedom and democracy!
