Ontario’s new Energy Minister for the Ford government, Stephen Lecce

Ontario’s new Minister of Energy and Electrification, Stephen Lecce, recently called any opposition to fossil gas energy “ideological.”

We disagree.

Less than a decade ago, Ontario was on the path to eliminating fossil fuel generation from its electricity grid. Then the Ford government took office and immediately ripped up 758 renewable energy contracts.

Doug Ford even took a televised victory lap saying he was “so proud” to cancel contracts for wind turbines.

Now that sure sounds “ideological.”

Ontario Premier and Doug Ford and his Conservatives have left us lagging behind other regions of the world on turning to cleaner sources of energy while they continue to push the the burning of climate-ravaging oil and gas

The Ford government is taking us down the wrong path by expanding fossil gas generation. We once had one of the cleanest power grids in the world but under Ford’s watch it’s becoming dirtier and dirtier.

Other provinces and countries are already reaping the benefits of their clean energy investments. In the U.S. renewable energy has earned $249 billion in climate and health benefits in just three years.

Ontario Greens are bringing the fight to Ford. Our climate is our future and we won’t let Ford destroy it with his “ideological anything-but-renewables” energy policy.

We’re calling on Ford and Minister Lecce to put an immediate halt to gas plant expansion in Ontario.
