QUEEN’S PARK – During Question Period, MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) amplified the priority of affordable housing support from representatives from the Niagara Regions visit to Queen’s Park this week (of May 13th to 17th).

“The Niagara Region is seeking a provincial partnership, ensuring we get people off the streets, out of encampments and into safe, stable homes” said Stevens.

“The heartbreaking reality is that right now private developers are not building non-market housing on their own – it only happens when governments make it a priority.”

The Region and City of St. Catharines are working to secure federal support for this project. A provincial commitment would strengthen the case for federal contributions, demonstrating a united effort to tackle homelessness and provide affordable housing.

“We all know this (Ford) government is lagging on its affordable housing targets, risking federal funding and leaving communities in need,” Stevens continued.

“Here is an opportunity to build affordable housing served on a silver platter. With shovels soon to be in the ground, we need a firm provincial commitment to ensure the federal government comes to the table. Will (Premier Doug Ford’s Municipal Affairs and Housing) Minister fully support the 320 Geneva Street project and help us provide families with dignity and a place to call home in Niagara?” said Stevens.
