Niagara Region’s Worst Plan Moves Forward

The Regional Government’s plan to rebuild Merritt Road “will destroy the wetlands and involve the removal of thousands of trees and the road will become a killing field for wildlife. At a time of Climate Crisis and catastrophic biodiversity loss, this plan cannot be justified.”                                                                                                     – Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee Niagara

The Merritt Road Environmental Assessment has been completed and will be ready for review from *March 18, 2024 to May 6*, *2024* on the project website: https://niagararegion.ca/projects/regional-road-37 .

The public will have 45 days to comment on the report once it’s posted.

Merritt Road is currently a 2-lane rural road that runs through Thorold and Welland. It has Provincially Significant Wetlands and Significant Woodlands to the north and the south. The road currently dead ends at the edge of a large Provincially Significant Wetland between Cataract Road and Rice Road.

The region plans to rebuild it into a three to four  lane road with bike paths and sidewalks and continue it through the currently unopened portion creating an area of destruction exceeding 35 metres in width.

The road building will destroy the wetlands and involve the removal of thousands of trees and the road will become a killing field for wildlife.

At a time of Climate Crisis and catastrophic biodiversity loss, this plan cannot be justified.

The Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee (BCAC) has spoken up against it from the time it was proposed and will continue to do so. More after we read the EA report.
