Tell Ford to Drop Plans to Build Highway 413 Through Our Greenbelt. There’s A Much Better Way

Highway 413 will run through thousands of acres of the Greenbelt, prime farmland, wetlands and watersheds – home to dozens of endangered and threatened species. It will cost taxpayers an estimated $10 billion

A Call-Out from the Green Party of Ontario

After a year of walk backs and flip-flops and legal embarrassments, you’d think Doug Ford might have learned something.

But no.

On the first day back at Queen’s Park after the winter break, the Ford government introduced the Get It Done Act – and just like the Greenbelt, the MZOs and the public sector wage cap, they’re getting it done wrong.

This Act will further WEAKEN ONTARIO’S THREADBARE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS and expand the reach of land expropriation, both designed to circumvent the checks and balances that would prevent the construction of Highway 413.

Highway 413 will run through thousands of acres of the Greenbelt, prime farmland, wetlands and watersheds – home to dozens of endangered and threatened species. It will cost taxpayers an estimated $10 billion, supercharge sprawl and pump millions of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. And it will save commuters around 30 seconds.

It will also run parallel to highway 407…

Highway 407 sits underused as traffic congestion worsens on the 401.

INSTEAD OF BUILDING A NEW HIGHWAY TO NOWHERE, THE GOVERNMENT CAN SOLVE THE PROBLEM TODAY SIMPLY BY SUBSIDIZING TRUCK TOLLS ON THE 407.

That’s the cheaper, easier way to get thousands of trucks off the 401 without paving over prime farmland, and disturbing river systems, wetlands and waterways.

Tell Doug Ford: We don’t need Highway 413. Doug Ford’s highway obsession is bad for Ontario – and Highway 413 isthe worst example.

We’re writing to Ford to tell him to drop his plans for highway 413 and reduce traffic congestion today by paying the tolls of truckers on the 407.
