A Call-Out from 50by30 Niagara and the Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee, citizens groups advocating for a reduction in carbon-polluting gases
Posted February 21, 2024 on Niagara At Large
Niagara, Ontario – Earlier this week a councillor in Hamilton presented a motion to Hamilton City Council endorsing the recent Ontario Energy Board to end a subsidy for Enbridge Gas, and asking the provincial government to support that decision (and not reverse it, as they’ve said they’ll do). Hamilton City Council passed the motion unanimously and will be sending a letter to the premier shortly.
The Ontario Energy Good believes that Enbridge has no business case for such a request, as it assumes that all homes will remain connected to the gas-grid for 40 years, an assumption that goes against Canada’s climate commitments and targets.
Every municipality in Niagara needs to do the same as Hamilton has done.
Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee Niagara, and 50by30Niagara, have prepared a joint letter that was sent out this morning to the Region and every municipality asking them to do just that.
You’ll find the letter to councils below. You can read a full backgrounder on the issue here – <https://www.safecities.earth/ontario-government-props-up-enbridge-gas-expansion/?fbclid=IwAR34e-otBiLu5iE3fx-lrfAHLaOMwVY3VEWkS8i2gUItmR2ALO5UCgomudA>
