Niagara, Ontario – On Wednesday February 21st, the Niagara District Council of Women and the Niagara Community Legal Clinic are holding a very important  Zoom meeting on the Housing crisis here in Niagara and across the country.

The featured speaker Kaite Burkholder Harris, the Executive Director of the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa, has a  deep understanding of the difficulties facing homeless individuals and families, and  is a key player in work to document the extent of the  housing crisis and bring community efforts together  to help promote policy changes at all levels of government.

Having worked as a front line mental health worker and witnessing systemic barriers that people face trying to find housing ,  Kaite sees  how “ larger system change is necessary to tackle the housing and homelessness crisis in Canada .”

As  Kate explains it,  ” The housing crisis has been building up  over the last 40 years” since  Canada Mortgage and Housing left the scene.

However  she is sure that;  “Homelessness is a solvable issue, when we have the political will to get it done. When we focus on policies and systems that lead to homelessness, we build a different way of thinking about solutions.

“Solutions exist,” she says  “Communities  are working extremely hard to help, and we  can end homelessness. We need to address the crisis at hand with forward thinking actions.”

Note:  Kaite Burkholder Harris has worked at the National level as a Policy Analyst with Reaching Home, the federal government’s homelessness Partnering Strategy  . In 2019 Kaite worked as a Systems Planner with the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness  and spent a number of years working, as a Project Manager for the  “ A Way Home Ottawa “,  in preventing and ending youth homelessness.
