A Song Of Revolution For All The People Falling Farther And Farther Behind In This Age of Growing Inequality

“While They’re Standing In The Welfare Lines, Crying At The Doorsteps Of Those Armies of Salvation. Wasting Time In The Unemployment Lines, Sittin” Around Waitin’ For A Promotion … Don’t Ya Know, They’re Talking About A Revolution.”                     – Tracy Chapman

Tracy Chapman and a song she wrote in the 1980s that is even more relevant today.

Being the music lover I am, I spent this past Sunday (February 4th) evening watching this year’s Grammy Award Ceremonies.

There were more than a few golden moments, including Joni Mitchell, now 80 years old and hardly looking in the best of health, performing one of her most iconic songs, ‘Both Sides Now’, in a way that was so moving it drew many in an audience of pop celebrities less than half her age  to tears.

There was also 59year0old singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman performing her 1988 hit song ‘Fast Car’ with popular country singer Luke Combs who, this past year, covered the song well enough to turn it into a hit again.

Which brings me back to Tracy Chapman, and a song she wrote and recorded in 1987 which was always my favourite by her and which I believe is more relevant today with so many people finding themselves falling farther and farther behind the upper five per cent than it was back then.

The song is called ‘Talkin’ About A Revolution and I think that every politician and business leader who can’t seem to figure out why so many people are angry at them and the system should be tied to a chair and forced to listen to it at a volume loud enough shake all their windows and rattle their walls over  and over again.

You can watch Tracy Chapman perform the song by clicking on the screen below, and see if you agree that it should be an anthem today –
