Ontario Place in Toronto, Ontario has, for decades, been a popular place for people and wildlife. The province’s Ford government is determined to change that.
As (Ontario’s Green Party) writes this, tall black fencing dominates the view of Ontario Place’s West Island (along the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto) – blocking visitor entry as the land is cleared for the construction of the massive Therme mega spa.
The Ford government has already green-lit the felling of 850 mature trees on the island, and soon site servicing crews will begin flattening the ground to prepare for construction.
In the process, they’ll destroy the habitats of many endangered and threatened species that live on the West Island and in the waters around it.
Ontario Place serves as a temporary refuge for migratory birds journeying south for the winter. Many of Ontario’s fish species spawn in the protected inlets around the islands. FOXES, MONARCH BUTTERFLIES, BROOK TROUT AND 192 BIRD SPECIES ALL CALL ONTARIO PLACE HOME.
As a park, Ontario Place has more than enough room for both animals and people.
As a spa, it will cease to be a habitat for the former, and it will push the latter out onto a handful of walkways around the perimeter of the building.
Ontario Greens are calling on the (province’s) Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma to cancel this disastrous scheme and commit to protecting the species that call Ontario Place home.
