Dense clouds of smoke from a record number of wildfires this past 2023 assaulted the respiratory systems of people and destroyed huge areas of habitat for wildlife across Canada and much of the U.S.
Ontario, Canada – 2023 was the hottest year on record – ever. Record-setting forest fires raged across North America, droughts beached fishing boats in the Amazon, and hurricanes, cyclones and tornadoes grew larger and more frequent.
Now, climate scientists are warning that we’re on the brink of surpassing our 1.5C warming target within the decade.
The science has never been clearer: we need to reduce our emissions NOW by moving to renewable energy as fast as possible. But as per usual, Doug Ford is asleep at the wheel.
After cancelling hundreds of renewable energy contracts in 2018, the Premier has recently changed course with a VERY modest round of renewable power procurement.
We need to go way further.
Because despite this recent change, the Ford government is still doubling down on costly fossil gas plants – a move that’s totally incompatible with our hope for a liveable future.
Ontario deserves better.
