QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) will keep up the fight for universal contraception after Ford’s Conservatives voted it down today.
“It’s outrageous that Ford’s Conservatives voted against giving Ontarians universal contraception today,” said Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition. “This is a common sense measure to lower barriers to accessing vital health care for so many, and a clear way to help lower costs amidst an affordability crisis.”
“It’s been a real honour to work with the advocates and organizations who are working tirelessly to bring universal contraception to Ontario,” said Stevens. “Hearing their voices and their stories has been so meaningful – and I’m determined to keep fighting alongside them until we make this a reality.”
Stevens tabled the motion (https://www.ontariondp.ca/news/ndp-tables-motion-make-contraceptives-available-under-ohip) on International Women’s Day in 2023. The motion was voted down by Ford’s Conservatives after debate on November 30.
“The fight for universal contraception won’t stop here,” said Stevens. “I will keep organizing in our community and advocating at Queen’s Park to address gender equity in a meaningfully way.”
Stevens’ motion is supported by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ of Canada, Coalition of YWCAs, Ontario Association of Interval Transition Houses, Planned Parenthood and many more organizations.
