Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates whose riding includes Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Niagara-on-the-Lake
QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls Riding) advocated for the restoration of 24/7 services at two urgent care centers in Niagara, including Douglas Memorial Urgent Care in Fort Erie.
In June 2023, it was announced (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/fort-erie-port-colborne-urgent-care-centres-1.6861656) that the Fort Erie urgent care centre would have reduced operating hours as a result of staffing shortages.
“The people of Niagara deserve health care that they can access 24/7,” said Gates. “No one should have to drive upwards of half an hour away to get to a hospital, especially now that winter is quickly approaching. Niagara’s storms last winter left residents stranded in their homes for days on end – and I’m concerned what might happen this year with this limited health care access.”
MPP Gates presented petitions organized by the Niagara Health Coalition, that feature over 4,000 signatures from residents demanding a return to 24/7 care.
“I am urging the Ford government to address this issue with the urgency it deserves,” said Gates. “We need to stop the privatization of our health care system, fully fund public care, repeal harmful legislation like Bill 60 & Bill 124, and address the staffing crisis in our hospitals. The people of Niagara deserve better.”
As of July 2023, Fort Erie Urgent Care Centre is only open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Otherwise, there is the additional cost of ambulance or patient transfer or taxis. All of these situations are a cost to the person that is sick. It is shameful that our community that built this hospital and watch it grow now must watch its closure. This is not equality in healthcare treatment by any stretch of the imagination.”

According to the latest posted signs, the population of Fort Erie is 30,000 and growing incrementally with all of the new subdivisions being built. Many are seniors. For comparison, the population of Midland is 17,200. They have a hospital. ER open 24 hours. Parry Sound population 2021 under 7000. 24 hour hospital. Listowel area under 10,000. Hospital open 24 hours. Stratford population 32,000. Open 24 hours. Many of these towns are close to other large centres like Barrie, KW and London. If you are in Fort Erie, Wainfleet or Port Colborne make sure you have a coronary or any accidents away from home and near another city or town.

For about a year I had to go to St Cat and Niagara Falls ERs dozens of times, accompanied by my wife. 7 to 9 hours sometimes longer waiting desperately for required Immediate Emergency Aid, That’s a lot of time to observe who goes there. Only a small percentage, like me, require Immediate Help, not forced to wait 9 hours. The vast majority do NOT belong in ERs, They belong at Urgent Care Units, or Walk-in Clinics. They are why the waits for those needing immediate help at ERs wind up waiting 9 hours just to see a Doctor, then longer to get treatment. When the majority do go to ERs, the ERs should re-direct ‘them’ to separate Urgent Care Units or Walk-in Clinics. Managed properly there would be enough staff to fulfill all 3 places of care. In my opinion, the way things are instead, is a very deliberate strategy to make ERs and Urgent Care Units dysfunctional, to falsely claim the need for funding Privatization of Health Care, which then robs funding from Public Health Care into dysfunctionality, thus feeding the false claims for privatization. Rise Up Everybody, one day you’ll need Public Health Care too, but very soon it won’t be there at all anymore, and you won’t be able to afford the Private Care, and you will die, instead of being saved.
