Here’s to Growing Ever More Tired of Trudeau’s Hollow Rhetoric

This Time It Is About Eradicating Poverty. But Then How Come Homelessness and the Demands on Food Banks in Niagara and Other Regions of Canada are Growing So Rapidly?

A Commentary by Doug Draper of Niagara At Large followed by a Statement from Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau so often fails to follow up his warm and fuzzy rhetoric with real iaction?

If Justin Trudeau’s Liberals wonder why they are sinking like a rock in the polls and why all those ‘F— Trudeau’ flags are out there – flags this journalist finds repulsive, by the way – they may want to consider the possibility that people have just about had enough with their failure to follow up warm, fuzzy promises with effective action.

On every challenge from the climate crisis to protecting democracy, soaring grocery costs, affordable housing and women from sexual abuse, Canadians have seen little more than lip-service or the recycling of promises put off for years (like the waving of the GST to build new rental apartments) from Trudeau’s Liberal government.

As recently as this October 17th, Trudeau has issued a statement observing the “International Day for the Eradication of Poverty,” followed by a bunch of words on how much r his government has done to eradicate poverty across Canada.

Yet many everyday Canadians, including this one, find ourselves slipping further and further behind in the struggle to pay for the basics we need to live a decent life.

Almost every day, in our local media outlets and across the country, we are met with headlines about the growing number of people joining the ranks of the homeless and/or having to resort to food banks and other charity services to meet the essential needs of their families.

Meanwhile, Trudeau’s Liberals continue to waive taxes for developers, land speculators and others and continue to follow a now decades-long trend of senior levels of government getting out of the business of working with local municipalities to build affordable housing.

Certainly not a peep about promoting a basic or livable income to raise people above the poverty level.

Thanks to this lame government of Liberals, Canadians may very well end up with something even worse – a Conservative government led by (yes, I don’t take climate change seriously) Pierre Poilievre.

In the meantime, here we go again with this latest warm and fuzzy statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Read it below and judge for yourselves –

A Statement by the Prime Minister on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

October 17, 2023, Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty:

“Today, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty  <https://www.un.org/en/observances/day-for-eradicating-poverty>, we recommit  ourselves to building a world where everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from, has every opportunity to succeed.

“Our approach to put people at the centre of everything we do is working. Since 2015, we have cut the poverty rate in half in Canada. We have lifted more than two million Canadians out of poverty – including more than 650,000 children.

Today, there are over a million more Canadians working than there were at the beginning of the pandemic – and that’s good news.

“In the face of global inflation, the Government of Canada is working to make life more affordable for people, including by stabilizing the cost of groceries and building more homes. With support like the Canada Child Benefit, which provides up to $7,437 per child this year alone, we have made a real change in people’s lives.

“We are also working to deliver $10-a-day child care right across the country in the coming years, getting kids the dental care they need now, and permanently increasing Old Age Security for seniors 75 and over by more than $800 a year.

“The eradication of poverty in all its forms is the very first of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – a pathway for Canada and the world to achieve a better, equal future. Canada remains unwavering in its commitment to achieving the SDGs, and we will continue to work with our domestic and international partners, including through our Feminist International Assistance Policy, to make them a reality.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I reaffirm our commitment to building a future where no one gets left behind, and I recognize all those working alongside us to achieve this goal. By working together, we will end poverty and create a more prosperous world for all.”

  1. I find it amazing that with the Liberals down in the polls as they are not to mention Trudeau fatigue the Liberal Party themselves are solidly 100% behind him and NO Plan B.If an election were held today they would lose big time and then the knives would be out. Trouble is they should of done that 15 months ago.Don’t those guys read a newspaper or watch the news or read polls?

  2. I am not going to disagree with you regarding Trudeau and the Liberals. They are moving much too slowly to affect any real changes with regard to climate change, poverty or homelessness. Sadly, the alternative (Poilievre) and his Conservatives will take us back decades in social reform as well as continuing to deny climate change. Too many Conservative MPs are anti abortion and rights for the LGBTQ community. That does seem to be the base that most strongly supports the Conservatives. Listening to Poilievre speak about “freedom of speech” makes me wonder what that means to him. We already have freedom of expression in Canada. Does he want to open the door to hate speech? Will he open the door to FOX News and all the lies they spew? He wants to shut down the CBC. I find that on any given day they give the most balanced news of all. Poilievre wants to reduce prices of groceries. That’s something we all would like but does that mean he will open the doors for American food giants to close our Canadian grocers? Does it mean that wages and benefits for workers will be reduced? It’s easy for him to spout tag lines but his solutions to the many problems we have are not clear and could have lasting repercussions. On the other hand, I really don’t believe that Singh has any hope of forming a government and I wish he would stop throwing barbs at the Liberals. That only seems to strengthen the Conservatives and while the NDP hold the Liberals to account, they should, in my opinion, do the best they can to push for progressive legislation. I have never supported the Conservatives but until recently, have never felt fear that they would be elected. I feel that fear now. There seems to be little doubt that the Liberals will not win the next election. My only hope is that the Conservatives do not get in with a majority.
