Here We Humans Go Again. More War, More Death and Destruction

A Brief Note from Doug Draper, journalist/publisher , Niagara At Large

‘The Face of War’ by artist Salvador Dali

The terrible news coming out of the Middle East over the past few days is another reminder of four words I have framed on a wall above a desk where I do my writing – “MY SPECIES DISAPPOINTS ME.”

With all of the pressing challenges we face in our communities, our countries and all around the world, from hunger, homelessness, poverty and climate change – challenges that too many of our politicial leaders and to many of the people who support them question whether we have enough financial resources to solve – there always seems to be enough money to wage war.

I am far from being any kind of expert or scholar on Middle East affairs so I won’t pretend to be one here by writing a commentary on the latest shooting war declared there.

I will simply leave you with what I consider to be  one of the more powerful songs written about the responsibility we all have to end this murderous business, composed and performed by one of Canada’s greatest, Buffy Sainte-Marie.

But the shapes of gutted buildings strike terror to the heart
And you say how did it happen and you say how did it start
Why can’t we all be brothers? Why can’t we live in peace?
But the hands of the the have-nots keep falling out of reach
