Niagara, Ontario In June 2021, the federal government announced the creation a new statutory holiday known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to be recognized 30 September each year. 

This day fulfills the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call-to-Action #80 and will serve as a day of remembrance, reflection, action and learning. Since 2013, 30 September has been known as Orange Shirt Day, a day to recognize the tragic history and long-standing effects of residential schools.

This special edition of The Circle will take place on Sisters in Spirit Day, an annual day to honour and remember the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, and to support grieving families and community members. 

Featured artist Geneviève Gros-Louis Salamone is a renowned violinist, film composer and producer from the Huron-Wendat Nation, whose music has graced esteemed events like Cannes Film Festival, Paris Fashion Week, and Wendake International Pow Wow, captivating audiences with her cultural storytelling. 

Following the Sisters in Spirit walk, which begins at St. Catharines City Hall at 5pm, all are welcome to join The Circle where two formidable artists will share their gifts in Robertson Theatre.

Living Mino Bimaadiziwin: An Indigenous Journey through the Arts is curated/directed by Michele-Elise Burnett, Artistic Director of Celebration of Nations and President of Kakekalanicks Indigenous Consulting Company. This immersive visual and audio exhibition showcases artefacts and a variety of visual artwork by Indigenous artists and can be experienced in Robertson Theatre on Thurs 28 Sept from 4-7pm and on Sat 30 Sept 11am to 7pm.
