The Niagara District Council of Women is hosting a Public Zoom meeting on Wednesday September 20th   regarding “ Our  Great Lakes in Troubled Times  Big Threats, Root Causes, New Strategies. “

Our Great Lakes – the largest single source of fresh water in the world and vital to the lives of tens-of-millions of Canadians and Am,ericans – re,main under stress from a host of human activities. What can we all do together to protect this precious resource for present and future generations?

Speakers Jane Elder, from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania  and John Jackson of Kitchener, Ontario  have worked on Great Lakes issues  for more than forty years.

Both are founding members of the Great Lakes Ecoregion Network, a border-spanning network to galvanise leadership around tackling over-arching threats to the Great lakes, such as climate change and old and new toxic pollution, like radionuclides,- to air, water, soils, birds and animals and residents  in and surrounding the Great Lakes .

The Great Lakes are in deep trouble and in need of transformative change ! As our speakers will  highlight in their talk,  “we face a new era of challenges and opportunities in stewarding the Great Lakes, an ecosystem that holds over 20% of the world’s , and more than 80% of north America’s  unfrozen surface freshwater.

The management and policy regimes first developed over 100 years ago are ill- equipped to handle the challenges facing the Great Lakes  region today.     

However both Jane and John feel strongly that “there is a generational opportunity right now to start towards  true 20th Century stewardship “ and they  will spell out the  many ways this could and should happen.
