From Liz Benneian, Biodiversity and Climate Action Niagara, with her Special Thanks to another regional citizens group, 50by30Niagara –

On September 19th, Thorold City Council will be voting whether to approve Northland Power’s bid to install a Gas Peaker Plant in Thorold.

At a time when the world is literally on fire, we should not be adding any more fossil fuel generation, especially as alternatives exist (more wind, solar, large scale battery storage capacity, improve energy efficiencies, buying clean hydro from Quebec etc.).

It’s also important to remember that the Ford government is agreeing to 20-year contracts for these peaker plants, even though Canada may order them to be closed so we can meet our international agreements on lowering GHG emissions. That means you and I will continue to be footing the bill for energy that is not being produced for a decade or more.

If you are from Thorold, please consider making a delegation to Council on September 12th. You can apply to make a delegation here: https://form.thorold.ca/Presenter-or-Delegate-City-of-Thorold-Council?_mid_=163640 <https://form.thorold.ca/Presenter-or-Delegate-City-of-Thorold-Council?_mid_=163640>
