Queen’s Park, Toronto—This October 29th, NDP MPP Wayne Gates asked the Minister of Health to review their current mental health plans and increase funding for mental health services.
“Niagara has being shaken to its core by a shocking number of people who need mental health support,” said Gates. “People are struggling to get the services they need and they need more support from this Conservative government.”
“I’ve spoken to the families time and time again, and it’s clear to all of us in Niagara that the need for expanded mental health services is critical.”
Gates noted that right now, youth suffering from mental health issues can wait up to 18 months to receive the health care services they need.
“That’s 18 months of waiting for our young people struggling to get the services they need,” said Gates. “Not to mention the stress and the heartache for those caring for them and our front-line workers–we can all do better, It’s our responsibility to do better for these people.”
“Will you reverse the cuts to mental health funding by restoring the $330 million in funding and take measures to ensure that front-line services are there when people need them?”
Gates plans to further explore all legislative resources to ensure this government provides the necessary financial support for all required mental health services in Niagara.
