Could The Same Warning Hold True Right Here in Niagara, Ontario – for Niagara’s Regional Government?
A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

He reportedly doesn’t have the mental capacity to read much more than the scroll lines flashing across the bottom of the screen on Fox News – you know, lines with words and phrases in them like “hoax”, “witch hunt”, “no collusion”, “lock her up” and “Canada and E.U. countries are foes and freeloaders”.

Yet something inside Donald Trump’s reptilian brain has him channeling 1984, George Orwell’s nightmare novel about ‘big brother” and a totalitarian state on steroids.
Check the following line – a shout out from King Donald to a cheering crowd of his deplorables at one of his reality TV show-style rallies in ‘something tells me we aren’t in Kansas any more’ this July 24th – from the western world’s number one purveyors of “fake news” and alternative truths.” –
“Just remember that what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what’s happening.”
Compare that to this line from George Orwell’s 1984 –
“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

Can such dark and dangerous thoughts cast a shadow over Canada too?
Lest we on the north side of the border get feeling a little righteous and smug, go on Niagara Region’s website and navigate your way to the link for the video for the July 5th regional council meeting.

Fast forward to the part where some of our regional councillors and a lawyer they hired refer to reports in the local news media about possible irregularities around the process used to hire the Region’s current CAO, Carmen D’Angelo, and tune in to how they characterize the news as “unsubstantiated,” and as “rumours” and “hearsay.”
Stay tune for the ct possibility that this kind of talk about the news and about a recently released Ontario Ombudsman’s report may be used by some councilors when Niagara’s regional council meets in a special session this Thursday, July 26th starting at 4:30 p.m. to discuss what to do about big wigs in the regional government who seized a St. Catharines Standard reporter’s notes and computer last December, before ordering him off the regional headquarters property.
Like the Donald says; ‘What you are seeing and what you are reading is not what’s happening.”
