Welland Riding MPP Cindy Forster to speak at forum
Niagara, Ontario – The Niagara District Council of Women will be holding a February 14th Public Forum concerning the Protection of Vulnerable Adults at 8 p.m. in the Mills Room of the St. Catharines Centennial Library in the city’s downtown.
Speakers are Welland (Niagara Centre) RidingMPP Cindy Forster and Neal Schoen of Justice Niagara, who will be speaking on Ms. Forster’s proposed Bill 135, the Protecting Vulnerable Persons in Supportive Living Accommodation Act.
The Act would put in place licensing rules for privately operated Supportive Living Accommodations (SLAs), as well as increased protections to prevent mistreatment of vulnerable high-risk adults and seniors living in this type of housing.
According to Ms. Forster, “the lack of regulation and oversight of these services have, in some cases, exposed tenants to substandard living conditions resulting in physical harm and, tragically, even death.”
“In 2014, despite numerous charges and warnings from municipal fire officials, a 72-year-old man died after a SLA home caught fire in London, Ontario.”
