A Brief One from Niagara At Large publisher Doug Draper
December 17th, 2015
You had to know that sooner or later, with Donald Trump being the self-obsessed, circus ringmaster that he is, that America’s poster boy for all that is MAD – the one and only Alfred E. Neuman – would do a number on him.
And MAD’s number on Trump, whose slogan for his campaign for the U.S. presidency is ‘Make America Great Again’, is ONE – as in the magazine’s pic of the number one “dumbest person, event or thing” of 2015.
Inside the magazine’s covers, Alfred’s mad cap team of writers had this to say about the Donald under a heading that read ‘The Art Of The Heel’; “Donald Trump’s mouth is just like the hose that drain’s your septic tank – you never know what is going to come out of it, but you know it won’t be good. Whether insulting Mexicans, veterans and women or ridiculing Rand Paul, Roger Ailes and Jeb, candidate Trump takes delight in travelling around the country in his Trump logo-emblazoned helicopter, leaving voters waist-deep in his verbal diarrhea.”
I get the madness of all this. And yet as much as I hate to take issue with Alfred E. Neuman, who I have almost found common ground with since I first began reading his magazine during my Grade Three math class, I am not sure Trump is really all that dumb.
In fact, I think Trump is a very smart guy – certainly smarter than most of the media hounds giving him more hours all the other candidates get combined of free coverage. And smart enough to know exactly what he is dong and how what he is doing may very well win him one shat is arguably still the highest and most powerful public office on the planet.
What is dumb and very disturbing, for that matter, is the growing number of American’s whose inner anger, fear and xenophobia Trump has so adeptly tapped in to that they are willing to vote this dangerous blowhard into an office was occupied by truly worthy individuals like Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
