“I challenge readers to see the similarities and the differences among human and animal work-lives.” – Book’s author Kendra Coulter

Yet we often underestimate their role in the workplace and even put them in degrading and dangerous situations, says Brock University labour expert Kendra Coulter.
Coulter’s new book, Animals, Work, and the Promise of Interspecies Solidarity, is a unique look at the contributions, problems, and possibilities of work involving animals.
“Animals use their minds, bodies, and abilities in so many different ways,” says Coulter. “But despite its effects on literally billions of lives, work involving animals has not been well-studied in work and labour studies, or in animal studies.”
Coulter says she uses the book to foster a deeper understanding of what’s happening both in Canada and around the world. That understanding is vital to building respectful and socially just workplaces, she says.
“I challenge readers to see the similarities and the differences among human and animal work-lives, to confront the effects of human choices, and to recognize the possibilities for more hopeful paths forward,” she says.
‘Animals, Work, and the Promise of Interspecies Solidarity’ was released December 3rd, 2015 by Palgrave Macmillan.
