Now It’s Up To We, The People, To Make Sure Trudeau Moves Forward With A ‘Bold, New, Green, Totally Canadian Agenda’

A Comment from the Public Interest Organization Avaaz on the Outcome of Canada’s Federal Election

Dear Friends,

Let’s just take a minute to let it sink in — we finally got rid of Stephen Harper!!!

It took over nine years, but we can finally say goodbye to the Conservative government and everything that came with them — climate denial, corruption, silencing opposition, tax cuts for the rich, pipelines and pollution, and Islamopobia. The nightmare is over!avaaz canada electon

Many progressive groups did a ton of work to get this done. And the Avaaz community stepped up in a big way, campaigning in some of the closest races — and a progressive candidate won in every riding we worked in.

Together we picked up the phones and connected personally to thousands of Canadians in call-ins to swing ridings in Ontario and BC, urging them to vote for change. Our hard-hitting campaigns ran in ridings across the country, with radio and newspapers ads, lawn signs, and targeted social media.

And our banner ad on Harper’s terrible economic record was shared all over Facebook. No matter who we voted for, our community has a real chance to make sure our new Prime Minister lives up to our hopes and dreams.

That’s actually possible now — let’s call on Trudeau to stick to his promises and to bring a bold, new, green, and totally Canadian agenda to the world, and we’ll deliver the messages to our new PM on his first day in office: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/hope_for_canada_/?bRUUpdb&v=66466

We’ve fought Harper and his government constantly over the years — we pushed strategic voting in the 2008 election, shut down Fox News North, hit hard on climate policy, and battled Bill C-51. And in this election we overcame enormous odds.

The Conservatives changed our election laws, built an enormous war chest, and even called an outrageously long election so they could spend their way into office. But despite all the advantages, the voice of Canadians rejecting the fear and cynicism of this government cut through — fourteen Cabinet ministers lost their bids for re-election. World-saving climate talks are around the corner.

A global refugee crisis is unfolding. Big oil companies want to criss-cross our country with pipelines. And after all these years of frustration, we might just be able to meet these challenges with the progressive spirit of the country we love.

Let’s take this chance to work with Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberals to show them the compassionate, inclusive, sustainable vision of the country that so many of us share — one that we’re so much closer to winning back. Join the celebration and call on Trudeau to be our champion for the Canada we’ve been missing: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/hope_for_canada_/?bRUUpdb&v=66466

We lost some great leaders in this October 19th federal election, from Megan Leslie to Paul Dewar to Bruce Hyer, and with a brand new government there’s a lot we don’t know. But the chances of our hopes for Canada becoming a reality are so much better than yesterday.

We brought down Harper and took back the country — and that’s worth celebrating.

With hope, Danny, Emma, Ari, Ben, Melanie, Ricken, and the whole Avaaz team

  1. I had some friends from Thorold over today (4 of them) and they all commented on losing a good man in Malcolm Allen, one of the most consistent community-engaged MP’s ever, they said. So just adding him to the list, per their comments.

For me, in St. Catharines Riding, I am glad to see the back of the puppet-master. it will be interesting to see how his marionettes on St. C. city council will now act.

  2. The people have spoken. We voted for change. The majority believe Justin Trudeau will make a suitable Prime Minister. Whether we all agree is not the point. What matters now is that we get the country moving forward. There are major issues to address: the environment, poverty, homelessness, child welfare, senior care, an inquiry into missing Aboriginal women, the economy, refugee protection, our nation’s infrastructure, and many, many more.

We have a choice: get the country on track by working together, or let it continue to decline further into the “mire of meanness” not seen before Mr. Harper. There is much truth in the well-known proverb, “Together we stand; divided we fall.” Whether you agree that Mr. Trudeau ought to be our leader, the fact is he is the Prime Minister Elect. He has earned our support and the respect due his office.

Now, Justin Trudeau must prove he deserves both! I’ll do what I can to help.

    We must all help!

  3. Having just returned from visiting the FDR library in Hyde Park, I can’t help but wonder how we have reverted to the awful societal and political conditions that FDR (with the help of two amazing women, Francis Perkins and Eleanor Roosevelt) fought and successfully overcame. We have gone backward 80 years later. WHY???? I guess it’s just the perpetual swing of the pendulum. Democracy requires vigilance and we have to hold Trudeau’s feet to the fire. I hope we do so. The people need to take back what we have lost to the greedy bastards that currently buy governments as they did in the “Gilded Age” that was gilded only for the few. Unfortunately, in the US people like Bernie Sanders don’t have the wealth to compete but I agree with him that it is time for the people to revolt against those who wish to marginalize the citizens as if they own the country. Canadians just made a start in that by ditching Harper.

How about an article featuring how far we have, in many ways, regressed from that time to now? Most of FDR’s policies worked in spite of the scorn heaped upon them at the time. Do we listen to the scorn or do we learn from the results.
