The Mindless Vandalism Of Election Signs Has Become Epidemic In Niagara

A Brief Comment from NAL publisher Doug Draper

There are apparently a lot more people living in Niagara than I thought who have contempt for our democratic system of government.

Yet aother example of a recently defaced campaign sign in Niagara.

Yet aother example of a recently defaced campaign sign in Niagara.

So much so that the vandalism of candidate signs in this fall’s municipal elections has become a growing gesture of that contempt for our system democracy and for all who have fought and died for it.

I have contacted several candidates running in these municipal elections who are more disturbed than they have ever been in previous elections over the destruction of campaign signs by anonymous vandals who, like the brain-dead cowards they are, tend to do their kicking down of signs between sunset and sunrise.Once again, I say that the vandalism of campaign signs should be dealt with as a crime, subject to hefty fines and possible community service/jail time under the criminal code, and I would be all for inviting the perpetrators to move to a country like Syria or North Korea where they might find themselves being executed if they even discussed democracy.

Niagara At Large received the following note this October from St. Catharines regional councillor Alan Caslin who is running for another term on the Region’s council, and is posting it here as an example of what I have been hearing across our region about the destruction of election signs.

“It looks like vandals are at it again this election.  I found the sign in the attached picture at the corner of Church and Queen St. defaced with black marker.  The cost of the signs are about $20 each; but the cost is only part of the problem.  As a candidate I try hard to get my campaign message out and to encourage people to participate with their vote.  Having to repeatedly replace signs is a nuisance and interferes with the democratic process.  Not to mention, it gets expensive.  Hopefully I can get another two weeks out of the signs so they will at least last until election day. – Alan Caslin, Regional Councillor for St. Catharines

  1. It looks like one should follow the “DO” and “DON’T” of election signs. One don’t was do not use pictures. In the last provincial election, the moustache of a candidate was extended.
In this election the sign I have posted was found between houses. Could it be that the wind blew it over and a neighbour put it between the houses so it would not be blown unto the street? I would like to think so but I suspect a neighbour of removing it.
