News from the St. Catharines & District Council of Women
A public meeting on Prostitution and Federal Bill C-36 will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday September 11th at the St. Catharines Centennial Library.
The speaker will be Ebru Ustundag, an Associate Professor in Department of Geography at Brock University, who notes that , “sex work is one of the most contentious topics among feminists, social conservatives, and sex workers and their allies. Sex worker is a wide category that includes men, women, and transgender people employed in various aspects of sex work (e.g., phone sex, escorting, erotic dancing, and street-level sex work).
Sex work has also been one of the most contested areas in the Canadian legal system, as well as in feminist activist and legal networks. The Conservative government’s recent proposed sex work legislation, Bill C-36, will have significant impact on sex workers’ social and health rights including risking their exposure to violence.”
Ebru Ustundag is an Associate Professor in Department of Geography at Brock University. She is also affiliated with interdisciplinary MA program Social Justice and Equity Studies. She is a feminist urban geographer interested in exploring various forms of citizenship practices with a specific emphasis on materiality of everyday life.
The meeting is sponsored by the 19 Affiliated Group members and the Individual Members of the not-for-profit, citizen-based St. Catharines & District Council of Women.
The St. Catharines Centennial Library is located in the city’s downtown at 54 Church Street. Due to construction please enter the library from the parking garage off Academy St. or the Church Street entrance.
