“Jack was a fearless advocate when it came to protecting the environment,” said NDP MP Malcolm Allen (Welland). “It’s an honour to celebrate Jack’s birthday by taking on an issue that was close to his heart. We will never forget his commitment to the environment and our responsibility to the next generation.”

New Democrats are also calling out the Conservatives for their failed record on the environment; particularly, Stephen Harper cancelling the Eco Home Retrofit Program that helped cut emissions and saved money on energy bills for Canadian families.

“I still remember when the unelected, undemocratic Senators killed Jack Layton’s bill to set emission targets, despite being passed in the House of Commons,” added Allen. “From withdrawing from the Kyoto Accord to cancelling the Eco Home Retrofit tax credits, the Conservatives can’t be trusted to protect the environment.”

New Democrats are encouraging residents to join Malcolm Allen and his team for their National Day of Action. Here are the details:

Friday, July 18th, 9:00AM-11:00AM, Port Colborne Farmers’ Market

Saturday, July 19th, 9:00AM-11:00AM, Welland Farmer’s Market

A lot of my hopes for a real and responsive democracy died with Jack. The only time since Kennedy that I shed tears over a politician’s death.

  2. We did a lot of crying in the 1960’s, when it seemed like every other week or so a political icon was being assassinated. Layton was a Toronto politician who went National with good timing to inspire an NDP populist wave known as the Orange Crush shortly before he passed on via an unfortunate illness. Though he was held in high esteem, I believe Welland owes much more at the provincial level to the memory of MPP Peter Kormos, a valiant and logical warrior for the people, and another one who seemingly checked out far too prematurely.

  3. Yes Linda as usual I fully agree with you and the fact that Kennedy was probably murdered by the CIA, a criminal group he was about to eliminate leaves many wondering about today for us and the future for our grandchildren
