Niagara Fall, Ontario, January 27th, 2014  – A hospital and two new urgent care centres in the region, said Liberal MPP Glen Murray today in front of the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Portage Road.

“Ontario Liberals have built 22 new hospitals since 2003, and Joyce Morocco is the only candidate committed to building the 23rd right here in Niagara Falls,” said Murray, noting Ontario Liberals have committed $26 million for a new Niagara Falls hospital and two new urgent care centres.  “Joyce helped raise $9.2 million for the new ER as Chair of the Greater Niagara General Hospital Foundation, and she’ll fight for the new hospital located right here in Niagara Falls.”

“Not only did the NDP unanimously vote against locating the new hospital in Niagara Falls, but the NDP has said repeatedly that a new hospital should be located in Welland, not in Niagara Falls,” said Murray.  “The NDP has gone even further by presenting petitions in the legislature to locate the hospital in Welland.”

Murray was referring to comments made by Welland NDP MPP Cindy Forster who stood beside Andrea Horwath last November to vigorously denounce the notion of locating a new hospital in Niagara Falls, saying unequivocally “Niagara Falls is not the right location … it doesn’t serve south Niagara.”  (Welland Tribune, November 13, 2013).  Forster has also tabled petitions in the legislature stating “that any approval for a new Niagara south hospital include a site that is centrally located in Welland.” (Hansard, May 1, 2013)

Murray also noted that experts have rejected the NDP’s plan to scatter Niagara healthcare across six different sites.  “Dr. Kevin Smith says consolidating the five existing sites into one new hospital is the best plan for patients.  The NDP’s back-of-the-napkin plan makes no financial and no medical sense.”

“The PC Party has no plan to build new hospitals.  In fact, they’ve promised to cancel infrastructure projects across Ontario to pay for new transit in downtown Toronto,” said Murray.  “The PCs say they support a new hospital, but they’ve released two detailed policy papers on health care and neither one talks about building new hospitals.”

“Healthcare is a top priority to me, and I won’t stop until we can provide Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, and Niagara-on-the-Lake with the state-of-the-art healthcare they deserve,” said Morocco.  “I will work at the table with Premier Kathleen Wynne to invest in people and build modern infrastructure here in Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.”

  1. It is unfortunate that politics rather than peoples’ needs are the priority. NF Hospital site is to address poor location of the new hospital not needs of the people. NfF Hospital will meet my needs from Fort Erie. I cannot say the same if I lived in Port Colborne

  2. “Plan.” What “plan” is this that Joyce Morocco speaks of? Kevin Smith made a proposal, yes, but it can hardly be termed a “plan.” That’s what the $26.2 million planning grant is for: to flesh out this proposal. And Mr. Doyle is absolutely correct — the last thing considered in any of these decisions is the needs of the populace. It is all about politics—not so much partisan politics as the politics of healthcare.
