Tragically, we don’t have too many reporters left in Canada who have the will or resources to fearlessly investigate this country’s tar sand follies and other environmental transgressions.
Most of the mainstream media, owned and operated by corporate chains with links to the oil industry and other global enterprises, have gutted their newsroom resources to a point where reporters can’t give environmental issues the coverage they deserve even if they wanted to.That is why you might want to take the time to drive to Hamilton, Ontario this coming November 28 for a rare evening with Andrew Nikiforuk, one of the few journalists left in the country with the courage to challenge the propaganda the mainstream media seems only too willing to pipe out there for the tar sands industry.
This special event is being hosted, at least in part, by CATCH (Citizens at City Hall), a group that does a great job of maintaining an independent online source of alternative information about the Hamilton area that the mainstream media does not necessarily pay much, if any attention to.
Niagara At Large is pleased to share the details posted on Hamilton Catch News earlier this month on the Andrew Nikiforuk talk in the space below. NAL also encourages you to become a regular visitor to Hamilton Catch News by clicking on www.hamiltoncatch.org/ .
Spirit of Red Hill lecture
One of Canada’s most acclaimed investigative journalists will speak in Hamilton this month on Bitumen, Pipelines and the Petro-State. Andrew Nikiforuk, winner of seven national magazine awards and a Governor-General’s prize for non-fiction, is this year’s Spirit of Red Hill Valley. The topic of his lecture is especially relevant to city councillors and local residents grappling with the plans by Enbridge to ship bitumen through Hamilton in an old pipeline.
Nikiforuk’s books include Saboteurs: Wiebo Ludwig’s War Against Big Oil; Empire of the Beetle (an examination of the impacts of the pine beetle infestation that has devastated forests across North America) and most recently, The Energy of Slaves that was recently featured on CBC radio. The free lecture takes place on Wednesday, November 28 starting at 7:30 pm in First Unitarian Church (170 Dundurn Street South in Hamilton).

I’ve been a fan of Andrew Nikiforuk’s journalism for several years. His 2008 book, “Tar Sands. Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent” is still unparalleled as a fascinating introduction to a complex subject. Nikiforuk writes regularly on energy and environmental issues for the BC on-line news/information site, The Tyee. I wouldn’t miss this lecture for the world!
