Brock University Gets Ready To Host Its First Ever Pow Wow

(One of the most community active student groups at Brock University is the Student Justice Centre which engages in many social justice issues, not just on campus, but across the province of Ontario and country. You might want to check out this Pow Wow and meet them, if not join their ranks. In the meantime, Niagara At Large is pleased to post this information from this dedicated group of campus activists.)

Brock University will be hosting its first ever traditional Pow Wow demonstration.

This three hour event will give students an opportunity to witness what a traditional native gathering can be like. Although traditional gatherings can last for more than three days, the organizers wanted to start small and hopefully build in the upcoming years.

Most universities across Canada have large Pow Wows each year that draw hundreds of people out to the event, some continuing the tradition for more than ten years. It is hoped that this year will be the start of a new tradition that will celebrate the strong native presence here in Niagara and also provide an opportunity for students to learn more about Canada`s First People.

The event is being hosted by the Student Justice Centre at Brock University, a centre that provides a safe space for students as well as advocates against issues of discrimination and other forms of oppression. The event itself however is being organized by Adrienne Smoke, an experienced Pow Wow dancer and current drama student at Brock.

Food is being provided by Brock Dining Services and this is in collaboration with Aboriginal Student Services, The Tecumseh Centre and the Brock University Students` Union. If you are interested in learning more about the Pow Wow or the Student Justice Centre, please contact Tikvah Mindorff at sjc(at)busu.net.

For more information or to participate as a dancer, drummer or vendor, email the Student Justice Centre, visit them online or call 905-688-5550, ext. 6325.

  1. The Native peoples benefit greatly from their Pow Wows a sense of togetherness and well being, an incubator for ideas and share their tribal cultures, the dancing is infectious and uplift their spirits, this could also benefit us palefaces, as many carry native genes in their blood.a homecoming of a sort.
