From the Office of Federal MP Malcolm Allen
(The following message from the Welland, Ontario riding federal MPP is in response to the strike of Brock ESL instructors which began on March 26 following a breakdown in talks over a collective agreement negotiated between the instructors and university over a reported “error” the unviersity discovered in a draft copy of the agreement.)
Ottawa – Welland Riding MP Malcolm Allen is calling on Brock University to live up to the collective agreement they signed with their English as a Second Language Instructors.
“Ontario workers have the right to bargain collectively as defined in the Ontario Labour Relations Act. Brock University has a responsibility to respect those rights,” said Allen. “When you agree to something, you should live up to it. It’s a matter of integrity.”
Major disruptions are making life more difficult for everyone on campus, added Allen, but picketing would be unnecessary if the University simply accepted the fairly negotiated settlement they already signed.
“It’s unconscionable that Brock has allowed their own mistake to spiral out-of-control like this. They should do the right thing by living up to their agreement
and getting folks back to class.”

It’s because of spineless politicians like Malcolm that unions continue to disrupt our lives when their ridiculous never ending demands are finally brought to task by the employer.
Unions have outlived their usefulness. I think the majority of us would agree that these workers are not hard done by, receive a fair compensation package and have access to employment which is more than roughly 8% of our population can claim. If the University, for whatever reason, needs to review wages, benefits and work load, it should be able to. This is a reality non-unionized private sector workers deal with all the time.
I personally think union based collective bargaining rights should be eliminated in the public service because of events like this. Unions no longer seem to have a grasp on what is practical, reasonable and have lost a sense of reality. The impact of their greed far reaching.
I recall almost a year of my life in college put in jeopardy because the professors then felt that working for 20 hours a week, 7 months a year was too much in return for a 6 digit salary, extensive benefits, job security(tenure) and gold plated pension.
I’ve was a member of a union, was told to work less by shop stewards and union office reps, experienced strike vote rigging and basically was intimidated by lazy union co-workers because I wanted to do a good job. Who hasn’t seen that played out.
We need to remove unions from our society. The benefits will be more stability, higher productivity and a higher quality product/service.
Malcolm needs to get a backbone and use his position to support the efforts of all organizations like Brock that wish to bring an end to the blackmail efforts of its unionized staff.
Everyone knows that there are plenty of people willing to fill these positions at a fraction of the current compensation. I say lock these workers out and bring in some new workers who will appreciate the job and probably do a better job.

Maybe Malcolm should stick to federal politics.
