A News Brief from Niagara At Large
Niagara riders using the Go Train service out of the St. Catharines, Ontario railway station may now find commuting easier with a fare card called PRESTO.
“With PRESTO, riders using Niagara’s GO Train service can travel across multiple transit systems with just one card (that makes it) simple and convenient,” said St. Catharines MPP and Liberal cabinet minister Jim Bradley in a media release this August 5. “Improving public transit is part of the Ontario Government’s plan to create jobs and opportunities in Niagara and across the province.”
“Commuters will appreciate the convenience of PRESTO, which will encourage more ridership on this affordable, environmentally-friendly GO Transit system,” says St. Catharines Mayor Brian McMullan.
The PRESTO card allows commuters to travel between multiple transit systems using a single card. Users load it up with a dollar amount and “tap on” when boarding a bus or train. The fare is automatically deducted from the card. This eliminates the need for exact change, tickets or transfers to get on a bus, GO Train or subway.
PRESTO is being rolled out to commuters in stages. It can already be used on Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington, Brampton, Durham Region, Mississauga MiWay, York Region Transit, on all GO Transit stations and 12 TTC subway stations.
