Student Artists Encouraged To Submit Work For Heritage Cause

Friends of Willowbank, a not-for-profit citizens group dedicated to restoring the 19th century Willowbank estate in Queenston, Ontario, is calling on student artists to submit their work for possible use for one of its major fundraisers.

The winning submission will be featured on posters for the 2011 Willowbank Jazz Festival, an annual event that helps raise funds for restoring the estate and for other educational and training programs the Willowbank group runs to promote heritage conservation in our region and others.

The details of this call for art submissions is posted below in a release sent to Niagara At Large by Friends of Willowbank. NAL is pleased to post it.

Call for Art Work Submission

We are seeking cover art for the 2011 Willowbank Jazz Festival. The art will become the 2011brand image for all promotion of the festival. This includes digital and hard copy material such as web, advertising, posters and tickets.

Willowbank is a rare and beautiful 19th century estate and the setting for an innovative
educational and training program in heritage conservation. The two come together in a living, learning and working environment that celebrates the revitalization of our cultural and historical legacy.

The annual Jazz Festival has been a fixture at Willowbank since 2003, and attracts a broad audience from the Niagara region and beyond. It takes place on the broad lawns created by the Brights in the 1930s, during the heyday of jazz as an emerging art form. The festival features both established artists and one or two up‐and‐coming newcomers each year.

A winning poster from an earlier year.

Submissions are open to any student registered in an art related program. We accept
illustrations, mixed media, and photographic images. Find below examples of the 2009 and 2010 Willowbank Jazz Festival Posters. Please note the layout of required text and how this might work with art submissions.

Students may submit up to three original images. All submissions must be sent electronically to school@willowbank.ca . All files should have a minimum quality of 300 dpi. Please submit files in one of the following formats: TIFF, JPEG, PNG, EPS, or PDF. If file is larger than 10 MB contact the provided email address and direction will be given to upload to a file sharing site.

Please provide the art related program you are attending and career aspiration, i.e. graphic designer, teacher, mixed media artist and so on.

The winning submission artist will be credited on the 2011 Jazz promotional material, and promotional copies will be provided for artist portfolios. A large format poster, 24”x32”, signed by all of the jazz musicians will be used as an auction item. The poster will be auctioned at the event with the winning submission artist gaining half of the proceeds up to $300.

The submission deadline is Monday February 28, 2011
