New from the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association
Fort Erie, Ontario – The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association (CCFA) of Niagara invites local residents to celebrate 70 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between Canada and Cuba with a BBQ of Cuban food and music to meet Toronto Consul-General Javier Domokos Ruiz and his staff, who will be available to answer questions on Cuba’s latest developments.
This , at 1760 Ridge Road in Ridgeway (Fort Erie) between 1:30 pm and 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 2nd.
The celebration comes in the wake of the United States re-establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba as well as the Cuban team competing in the Pan-Am Games. The BBQ is also a fundraiser to provide scholarships for local residents to volunteer in Cuba as part of the Canada-wide Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade which has sent five local residents to date.
Niagara MPs Malcolm Allen and Dean Allison, Region Chair Alan Caslin, as well as Welland Vice-Mayor John Mastroianni have confirmed attendance and will make a public address.
Dave Thomas, Sr., chair of CCFA Niagara, explains that the CCFA-Niagara “A Taste of Cuba” BBQ “is a rare opportunity for the people of Niagara to speak with the Toronto Consul-General of Cuba, Javier Domokos Ruiz, in an informal setting, perhaps about your vacation in Cuba or if you are curious about the latest news about the island. I hope the United States can learn from Canada’s experience with Cuba.” Past BBQ attendees have included local elected officials who addressed the public as well as residents who have participated in the Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. Information about volunteering in Cuba will be available. Cuban food and music will be on offer with ticket prices set at $10 per adult and children under 12 being admitted for free.
The Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association of Niagara is also celebrating its 15th anniversary as an organization of local volunteers which promotes friendship and solidarity between the Canadian and Cuban peoples through educational and cultural activities.
Niagara residents who have not participated in the Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade before may apply for scholarships by writing directly to CCFA Niagara about their interest. The scholarship ranges from $250 to $300 per applicant and the Brigade leaves for a two-week volunteer experience late April through early May.
