Submitted by Marty Mako and Gail Benjafield on behalf of The St. Catharines Heritage Committee

Feburary 3rd, 2014 – St. Catharines, Ontario is proud to have one of our own receive this,  the prestigious Ontario Lieutenant Governor’s Award,  to be presented later this month in Toronto.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards are presented for outstanding contributions to the identification, preservation, protection and promotion of Ontario’s heritage.

The St. Catharines Heritage Committee, spearheaded by member Marty Mako, enthusiastically supported the nomination of co-chair Brian Narhi, followed by city council’s endorsement of the nomination. Other members gathered together recommendations from various community groups for which Brian has volunteered to support the committee’s nomination, said member Gail Benjafield.

Brian Narhi has volunteered for years for the City’s Heritage Committee, The Mayholme Foundation, the City’s Cultural Committee, the Historical Society of St. Catharines, the War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee and much more. His involvement in giving back to the community is diverse and includes;

  1. Efforts in the built heritage, cultural heritage and natural heritage sectors. Brian is often called upon by community organizations to make presentations concerning local history.
  •  While passionate about numerous causes, Brian is humble about his achievements and as Mako says “he epitomizes Winston  Churchill’s famous words, ‘we should not work for recognition, but always strive to do work worthy of recognition.’ “

 The nomination stressed that Brian’s contributions to conserve our local heritage will resonate for generations to come and the City of St. Catharines is a better place for all of us because of his past and continuing volunteerism in this area. We heartily congratulate Brian on receiving this recognition from the Province.
