(A week and a half ago, Niagara At Large posted a plea on this site from Lawrence Pinsky, one of our friends and Montreal journalist and long-time animal advocate, about the desperate plight of a dog named Amalia, who was hungry and being beaten by someone on the streets of Greece.
Well, in a month where we have been bombarded with an extraordinary amount of bad news, Lawrence has some good news to share about Amalia, thanks to donations from some of you folks out there.)

Dear Friends, Thank you so very much for your generosity.
Donations have really helped to get Amalia off the street and has ensured that she is now getting her meds. I know she is doing better because I have just seen a picture of her and another of the rescues being walked. Amalia looks a lot happier than she did in the very forlorn picture of her living on the street just a couple of weeks ago.
There is a very good chance that this sweet doggie will be going to Holland as soon as FOS (the organization in Serres, Greece) finds a good home for her there through another organization in Holland.
I am told they expect that Amalia will be healthy enough to travel after the 26th of the month. They use a special transport container that is pretty expensive for a dog this size and your donations will pay for that and her transport to Holland. I will keep you updated.
Truly, if there was no response from all of us, it’s very likely that Amalia would still be on the street in danger of being beaten or killed.
This organization does incredible work on behalf of the epidemic of abused dogs in Greece.
Here’s Amalia on the right (with Capree, another rescue from the street), two days ago and another picture of her going to the vet:

I am happy the dog has a new home and is healthy. I am an animal lover and own two dogs. But there is a loud scream in my head that says “what are we coming to ” if we ignore starving and homeless children and adults while we worry about dogs. I know there are those who say we must care about all creatures but really? It is easier to donate to a helpless dog than it it to foster a teenager or support a mentally ill homeless person. Give your heads a shake and decide that people come first. End of sentence.

The news about Amalia is great! Lawrence Pinsky is definately one of the good guys. I know how difficult it can be to raise funds for critters. As a member of Niagara Action for Animals I am constantly involved in fundraising. We have no paid staff and huge numbers of requests for animal assistance. Every Christmas we have a gift wrap fundraiser at the County Fair mall in Fort Erie and now every Saturday and Sunday we have a book fair with greeting cards, ceramics and hand made goods at the mall. As most people believe this mall is no longer open we don’t get many customers but some is better than none and this month we will have a bit more than $100 to hand in. Yes, it is worth the effort. If even just one critter’s life can be helped any effort to raise funds is worth it.
