When the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara was lit up in orange last year in honour of the Indigenous children who lived and died at Canada’s residential schools

Niagara Falls, Ontario –The Niagara Falls Illumination Board will be illuminating Niagara Falls in orange on the evening of September 30, 2022, in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Niagara Falls will shine a bright shade of orange for 15 minutes every hour, at the top of the hour, throughout the evening, beginning at 8 p.m.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was established to commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of the residential schools system in Canada.

September 30 is also recognized as Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative that honours residential school survivors and remembers those who did not.

The day relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation and her first day at a residential school, where she arrived dressed in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her.

The colour orange has become a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem, experienced by Indigenous children over generations and as an affirmation of the commitment to ensure that every child matters.

All special illumination requests are reviewed and approved by the Niagara Falls Illumination Board, which has financed and operated the “illumination of Niagara Falls” since 1925.

The Niagara Falls Illumination Board is made up of representatives from the City of Niagara Falls Ontario, City of Niagara Falls, New York, Ontario Power Generation Inc., New York Power Authority, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and The Niagara Parks Commission. It is the Illumination Board’s responsibility and mandate to finance and maintain the nightly illumination of both the Horseshoe and American Falls.
