Here’s Begging You Please America – Elect Joe Biden President or it Will Be a Darker World for All of Us

A Plea to Our American Friends and Neighbours from At Least One Canadian

A Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter and publisher           Doug Draper

At least some Niagara At Large readers may wonder why I dwell so much on the nightmare that has been folding over the past three or four years, south of the Canada-United States border.

The answer for me is simple and it begins with an insight about the Canada-U.S. relationship that then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau spelled out 51 years ago during a trip to the White House for a meeting with then-President Richard Nixon.

“Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.”

Elephants, unfortunately, are animals that many often associate with circuses rather than the great wide-open savannas that should be their peaceful homes.

And for the past three or four years, with Trump’s ascendancy to power in the U.S., we Canadians have had ring-side seats at a circus that has often come off as more of a horror show, with the most scary kind of clowns anyone could conjure up in a nightmare laughing wickedly in our face.

Trump and his army of willing enablers have not only caused grave damage to the pillars of democracy and fair, civil governance in their country. They have done significant damage to us, and they have placed the hopes and dreams of a healthy, prosperous future for our children in Canada, and the rest of the world, in jeopardy too.

After decades of Canada and the United States working together to protect and preserve the quality of freshwater resources in our shared Great Lakes, the Trump administration has been working to rip  apart all of the progress we have been making together, and all of the work that still needs to be done.

From the gutting of environmental protection programs and rules to restore and preserve the quality of our vital freshwater resources in the Great Lakes, to the shredding of air quality regulations and withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, to the imposition of punishing trade tariffs that have hurt jobs and economies in both countries, to impulsive, ill-advised acts of military aggression that, in one case last winter, resulted in the fatal downing a commercial airliner full of Canadian citizens, the damage and destruction Trump and his minions have unleashed on the world is already immeasurable.

And that does not even include the incalculable heartache and suffering for both Canadian and American people and businesses living in communities on either side of a border that has been closed to all but essential traffic since last March – and has remained closed thanks to a U.S. president that either can’t or won’t show the kind of leadership that other countries around the world have in dealing with this killer global pandemic.

Get him out of here.

One can only imagine how much worse it will get if this mad, reckless, hate-filled, self-serving monster wins a second term this November, with we Canadians living right across the border from a heavily armed country that is already showing signs of morphing into a totalitarian state.

As Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden put it in his speech this August 20th, on the final evening of the Democratic National Convention, nothing less than “democracy is on the ballot” in this November’s U.S. election.

Supporters cheer during Presidential Candidate Joe Biden’s Super Tuesday night event at Baldwin Hills Recreation Center in Los Angeles, California on March 3, 2020 .

So I make a plea again to our American friends and neighbours, do the only thing that makes sense for the future of your country and the world this coming November. Vote for Joe Biden and for every other Democrat you can running for the Senate and Congress.

Everything that every freedom-loving citizen in your country and ours has fought and sacrificed for is at stake. You have got to kick this evil-minded, crypto-fascist monster called Trump, and all of his boot-licking enablers out of office.

Now here, if you haven’t seen it, or even if you have, is Joe Biden’s August 20th speech at the Democratic National Convention. You can watch it by clicking on the screen immediately below –

For a bit of background on the damage Trump and his enablers have already done to Canada-U.S. relations, here is an interviews CBC Radio host Michael Enright did on the subject a few years ago with the great author and historian Margaret MacMillan. You can hear it by clicking on

  1. Sorry for the long response!
Even omitting the terrible policies, hatred and division that Trump promotes, how about electing someone who isn’t mentally ill and who is compassionate and human?
Watching the virtual convention this week I was more than impressed by the humanity and compassion so obviously apparent throughout.
Could you in your wildest dreams ever see Trump encouraging a young boy with a stammer? He would likely mock him like he did the handicapped reporter.
Consider the man with ALS, who deteriorated so horribly over just 2 years, testifying that needing health care is not someone’s fault. SORRY, preexisting condition. Trump wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with nothing. The guy’s gonna’ die sometime any way!
Does Trump care about generational farms disappearing? Nope. He did encourage China to but soy and pork in hope that that would help him get re-elected. Me, me, me.
Joe testified to the strength of his wife and his love for her, a working woman and a well educated one who helped him overcome tragedies in his life. His children and grandchildren are a REAL family, not mannequins and sycophants hoping for an inheritance who blurt out what daddy wants.
When have the Trump clan shown true love and compassion for each other? When Joe hugged Jill, it was genuine. Trump tries to hold Melania’s hand and she slaps it away. He thinks Ivanka is hot! Yuch! Abnormal.
Biden suffered losses and knows compassion. He has strong faith that helped him through his personal tragedies. Trump gasses fellow citizens for a photo op while holding a bible upside down at a church he doesn’t attend.
Biden’s son was a vet. Trump said he wasn’t stupid and wouldn’t go to Vietnam.
Biden’s father lost his job and Joe suffered hardship as a result. Trump was given everything and worked for nothing. How could he, by comparison, commiserate with someone trying to make ends meet?
Jill is a dynamo. So was Michele Obama. Where has Melania been for the last 4 years? Oh yes, running an invisible anti bullying campaign while married to the biggest bully on the planet. Nobody would likely notice if he replaced her with a cardboard cut out. Her face is like a mask, no emotions, just like Donnie’s. The only time he smiles is when he mocks someone and then it’s a smirk. She might possibly smile when he goes golfing, if then.
Biden shed tears when getting the Medal of Honor for 50 years of public service. Trump gave the same medal to Rush Limbaugh, a conspiratorial hate monger!
Biden fought for laws against abuse of women. Trump calls women pigs.
Kamala is the product of a true immigrant success story through hard work. Now Trump is trying the trite old chestnut of accusing her of being an illegal….born in California. Maybe it’s because she spent her high school years in Montreal, you know that security threat country!
Melania was an undocumented illegal who posed for semi naked photos and brought in her family by chain migration.
Obama said Joe was his right hand man who he could trust with important tasks and who worked tirelessly. Trump watches TV, golfs and tweets.
Photos of Biden with foreign leaders showed respect and congeniality. With Trump they showed disdain.
    The list is endless.
Sure Biden is old but ready to step in on day one and clean up Trump’s disasters. At least he seems like a human being who cares about others beside himself.

  2. The “elephant” to the south of us appears to be in decline financially, politically, ethically, and morally. That America under Donald Trump is getting meaner is increasingly evident. “Every twitch and grunt” of the elephant is having a bruising affect on Canada and the rest of the world. If Americans can be made aware of how the rest of the world is viewing their nation under the madness of Donald Trump, perhaps in the election of 2020 they will vote him out and turn things around before it is too late!
