Just When We Thought It Was Safe to Begin Re-Opening Again

Brace Yourselves Folks. It’s Time to Get Ready for a More Lethal Second Wave of this Killer Virus

Dr Bonnie Henry of British Columbia, one of Canada’s most respected voices during this pandemic

You know what? We’ve never had a pandemic in recorded history that has not had a second wave.”                                                      – Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia’s Chief Health Officer who, like New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to the south of us, has earned kudos around the world for her honest leadership during this COVID-19 nightmare

I went out for a short drive to a garden centre this weekend, and I don’t think it was just my imagination when I thought I saw the amount of traffic around the Pen Centre shopping mall and just a little further east near a mall that boasts an LCBO and a Sobey’s grocery store as busy as it might be on any “normal” weekend this time of year.

Traffic on our roads in Niagara seems to be getting back to normal again. On this stretch of Glendale Avenue in St. Catharines, there was barely a car on the road earlier this May. All this, while we are hearing that cases of COVID in the province are ticking up again. Photo by Doug Draper, taken May 23rd, 2020

Just a couple of weeks earlier, stretches of this same area along Glendale Avenue near the Highway 406 interchange were so void of traffic that a bunch of kids could have played a game or road hockey on it, if team sports were allowed at the time.

I don’t think it is just my imagination though.

I turned on the CBC this May 24th to reports of crowded sidewalks, beaches and parks this weekend, and this Sunday’s front cover of The Toronto Sun, a conservative-leaning paper that has not shown a report of being as much of an advocate for lockdowns and social-distancing as, let’s say a newspaper like The Toronto Star, featured a park in Toronto packed with people, many of them not appearing to be wearing masks or keeping two metres apart.

“T.O.’s COVIDIOTS” reads the headline Toronto Sun editors burned in big letters above an image of a mass of ‘Covidiots’ in one of the city’s parks.

All of this while, in Ontario alone, the province’s Premier Doug Ford has had to report, as recently as this May 24th, that for a number of days in a row, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Ontario are actually going up. That after watching the numbers go down for a while.

“The optimist in me would like to think that maybe it will go away, and the virus will mutate and won’t become worse,” said British Columbia’s Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry in an interview a few days back with CBC Radio host Matt Galloway.

“But you know what? We’ve never had a pandemic in recorded history that has not had a second wave,” the good doctor said, concluded that a second wave in this case is probably inevitable.

During the devastating plague that ravaged the world 101 years ago, the so-called ‘Spanish Flu’ of 1918, there were similar accounts of people across Canada and the United States bursting to get back to whatever passes as “normal” after the first wave of the virus hit and seems to have subside.

By the fall of 1918, in the case of that pandemic, people went crowding out in the streets again, triggering a second wave that, by the end of it all, added up to a known death toll in Canada of roughly 55,000 or more, and a death toll in the United States upward of 675,000.

As of this May 24th, in Canada, the total confirmed number of deaths related to COVID-19 total more than 6,400. That is more than 6,400 real people who were here, celebrating the Holiday Season and ringing in the New Year with the rest of us just under five months ago.

In the United States, the number of deaths is rapidly approaching 100,000, significantly more than the number of Americans killed in more than a decade of war in Vietnam and recent wars in the Middle East combined.

This May 24th, the Sunday New York Times featured a front page that was covered with names and brief biographies of each American victim, names that spilled on to two more pages inside. Just a look at the front page of that paper, which is left on my front lawn each Sunday, was tear-jerking.

The startling front page of this Sunday, May 24th, New York Times. No pictures and the names of the COVID victims just goes on and on, spilling over to inside pages of the newspaper

Yet in that country, there is a screwball of a president encouraging states to re-open and refusing to wear a mask publicly, lest it send “the wrong message.” All while he is promoting quack remedies like shooting up with Lysol or popping pills usually used to fight off malaria, even though distinguished health experts warn that this could ravage the workings of a person’s heart to a point that it causes death.

This weekend, which happens to be the long Memorial Day weekend in the U.S., I watched report after report of crowded boardwalks and beaches in the U.S. In one CNN report, at a beach in Georgia where people were almost sitting on top of each other like cordwood, they interviewed one guy who looked and talked like Forest Gump’s dumber brother, who had this to say; “I have a Jesus that is much larger than this virus, and if it my time to go, it is my time to go. But while I am here, I am going to enjoy myself.”

That’s nice. While so many health experts and governors like the one in New York State, continue begging people to take all necessary precautions, not only to protect themselves, but to protect others, this holy man is determined, first and foremost, to enjoy himself. Is he absolutely sure that is something Jesus would say?

Many of America’s beaches, this one along the Gulf coast in Texas, packed with people this Memorial Day weekend.

Not to sound too redundant, but as I have said in commentary I have posted here before. Thank God that Canada-U.S. border is still closed to non-essential traffic, including cars carrying clowns like this.

Not to say that we shouldn’t be concerned about the recent up-tick in COVID cases in Ontario and the growing numbers of people leaving their homes and whatever droplets come with a cough or sneeze in re-opening stores and other venues.

I can’t help but witness all of this without fear that we are setting ourselves up for a second wave that is even more devastating than the one we are still coming out of.

I would start storing up toilet paper and canned goods now folks.

Those of us who continue to do whatever we can to stay home and stay safe through this nightmare might survive to see it through to the other end.

Not to worry!!!! Trump has received the endorsement of a group of doctors… THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SURGEONS AND PHYSICIANS”.

This group is NOT the AMA, “AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION” but a group of less than 5000 members (among the over 1.1 million physicians in the US) of right wing, conservative loony tunes with a close association to the John Birch Society who have some great ideas to help us all both during the pandemic and otherwise.

For your entertainment and amusement….a few of their beliefs:

    HIV doesn’t cause AIDS.
They do not recognize gun violence as a public health problem but insist guns save lives.
    Abortions cause breast cancer.
They oppose government programs that encourage smoking sensation.
Immigrants to the US are bringing in leprosy.
They believe vaccines cause autism (long since debunked). I wonder if they would favour a vaccine against Covid. Perhaps they think polio and smallpox were good things.
They opposed any investigation into one of their darling’s, Rush Limbaugh’s misuse of prescription drugs.
Human activity has no relation to climate change.
They oppose over the counter birth control.
They oppose the ACA (Affordable Care ACT/AKA Obamacare) or any form of universal health care.
    They oppose Medicare and Medicaid.
Homosexuality is a choice and a mental illness that can be cured.

Why does it surprise me that such a group would endorse Trump and they would fall in love? Surely if we follow their guidelines we will all be safe.
Go out and associate like you’re at a rock concert. The AASP has your back.

PS – This group also promotes hydroxychloroquine as a Covid treatment.
