Niagara Falls, Ontario  — NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) has responded to the Ministry of Health’s mental health and addictions strategy that fails to include any new funding for the crisis facing Niagara.

“People in Niagara are dying. We lose one Niagaran to suicide every seven days. Over 70 percent of calls to first responders in the region are related to a mental health crisis,” says Gates.

Preventative care and supports to family members helping their loved ones are already inadequate. Even worse, after 9 o’clock at night, there’s almost nowhere for people to go who are in crisis, except our already overstretched hospital.

The Ford government made a commitment to support the motion I introduced in the Ontario legislature to fund three 24-hour drop-in centres across Niagara that are critical to meet existing needs. The motion was passed unanimously with support from PC MPPs, including Niagara West PC MPP Sam Oosterhoff.

The government has now broken that promise. This is a shameful decision. Niagarans urgently need more funding for mental health right now. We cannot wait any longer. The Official Opposition will continue to fight for the funding Niagara was promised and that Doug Ford is now refusing to deliver.”

  1. Around the world there is an alarming escalation of depression, anxiety and suicide along with a huge host of diseases and health issues, neurological and otherwise. The rate of escalation is directly related to ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION and, with the pending delivery of fifth generation technology (5G), it will be exponentially worse (China is already working on 6G!!!). It is up to each and every one of us to discover what it is, where it is found (car, home, schools, hospitals, day care, shopping malls, grocery stores, bars, restaurants, LED lit streets, etc.), how it affects us, to limit our own exposure to the extent that is possible (tough to do when there is the mandatory installation of radiation-emitting “Smart” Meters in your home) and to tell our politicians at every level to reject 5G in our cities and towns.

Niagara Region alone is seeing several attempted suicides and drug overdoes daily. Mental health issues are becoming epidemic in number. They not only lead to early deaths but also impact other family members and their communities by straining their resources. Yet, Ford still does not tackle the problem. By not doing so, he strains community and family resources beyond breaking. Perhaps Ford does not have mental health problems in his family, but his government’s neglect of mental health problems is making him a carrier!
