Queen’s Park, Toronto  – As Long-Term Care workers from across the province came to Queen’s Park to voice their frustrations, MPP Sam Oosterhoff welcomed Minister of Health and LongTerm Care Helena Jaczek to her new portfolio with the hard reality of Long-Term Care shortages in Niagara.

“According to Region of Niagara numbers, from now until 2031, seniors 65 years and older will account for 60 per cent of our population growth” said Oosterhoff. “Right now, the average wait time for a bed in the Niagara Peninsula is close to four years. This is almost twice the provincial wait time of two years.”

“The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care has not built new beds in my riding since Woodlands of Sunset was completed in 2004. That’s over a decade ago!” Oosterhoff declared. “Will the Minister commit today to building more Long-Term Care beds in the Niagara Region?”

The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care evaded the question completely by trying to change the subject.

“The Liberals have spent the past 15 years ruining our healthcare system and now they refuse to take responsibility for their neglect and mismanagement,” concluded Oosterhoff. “Ontario simply cannot afford the Wynne Liberals anymore.”

  1. Actually the cutbacks began with the Mike Harris Conservative government in the 19902 and early 2000s BUT the Liberals continued the march to Privatization by Basically Privatizing the CCAC and in so doing almost completely eliminated the wonderful Victorian Order of Nurses, an organization that cared for the citizens of this country and province for more than a hundred years. So if stones are thrown make sure your GLASS windows are not in the line of Fire, Sir

  2. As Niagara ‘ages up’ this is an increasing problem. In the last 6 months, three friends have needed Long Term Care or Retirement residences. The latter was lucky to find a room quickly after coming out of hospital, and the first lucky too to find a bed, if not a room, in a local LTC home. Not her first choice, but a needed bed. The other friend languished in a local hospital care for five months. Then that friend simply died. The need for more LTC homes in Niagara is desperate.
