Niagara Ontario – Whether it is helping to rebuild our roads and bridges, supporting our public transit systems, improving access to clean drinking water, managing wastewater or solid waste, the federal Gas Tax Fund is making a difference in our communities right here in Niagara Centre.

The four municipalities in Niagara Centre – Welland, Port Colborne, Thorold and St. Catharines – will receive the following support this year in Gas Tax funding for their eligible priorities as follows:

  • Port Colborne $560,148
  • Welland $1,539,344
  • Thorold $545,160
  • St. Catharines $3,994,978
  • Total for all of Niagara Region municipal governments for 2016-17 = $23,700,000

“The Gas Tax represents real partnership in action,” noted Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey. “In this way, the federal and municipal governments can work together to bring about positive change at a local, grassroots level. Infrastructure is the backbone of our economy and our communities.”

“Well-planned investments in infrastructure generate economic growth, support communities and leave a lasting legacy for Canadians. Infrastructure is not an end in itself – it is the means with which we build a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable country,” Badawey added.

At more than $2 billion each year, the Federal Gas Tax Fund provides predictable, long-term funding to help Canadian municipalities build and revitalize public infrastructure. The Government of Canada is proud to help municipalities build the Canada of the 21st century and ensure a high quality of life for generations to come.

“The flexibility afforded communities via the Gas Tax Fund means that where one municipality may choose to replace aging pipes, another may choose to improve access to public transportation,” Badawey continued.

“We see the Federal Government’s financial commitment to infrastructure realized, while at the same time supporting the unique needs of each municipality. This financial contribution alleviates the financial pressure on the property taxpayer who would otherwise have to pay for such projects.”
