Ontario NDP Leader Backs Call For Investigation Into Niagara Health System

(Andrea Horwath has renewed her support for a full and independent investigation into the way the Niagara Health System has been managing hospital services in Niagara, Ontario. A new resolution for an investigation will come before regional council this February 10 and Niagara At Large will bring you the results as soon as possible.

Queen’s Park – Tonight, Niagara Regional Council is set to vote on a Resolution brought forward by the Mayor of Niagara Falls, urging the Ministry of Health to launch an independent investigation of the Niagara Health System. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath hopes the McGuinty Liberals are listening.
“Niagara Falls, Welland, and Fort Erie have all passed similar resolutions—looking for accountability and reform of the NHS. Tonight, the Regional Council will hopefully add their voice to that call. At what point will the McGuinty Liberals start paying attention to these legitimate concerns and finally take a good look at the situation in Niagara?” asked Horwath.

In September 2010, Ontario’s Ombudsman found widespread problems with Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network’s public engagement practices. Yet the decisions made by the LHIN and the NHS were allowed to stand and a full investigation was never initiated.

“Transparency, accountability, and access should be the basic tenets of our health care system. For far too long, the people of Niagara have been denied these basic things and it is time for the McGuinty government to take action and undertake a full investigation of the problems plaguing the NHS.”

(Niagara At Large at www.niagaraatlarge.com, is posting the following information from Willowbank, a wonderful heritage site in the Niagara-on-the-Lake community of Queenston, Ont., that might have been leveled to the ground a decade ago were it not for the efforts of the late conservationist Laura Dobson and other area citizens to save it, for a fundraiser Willowbank is hosting to support young artists.)

DATE: SATURDAY JUNE 5, 2010
TIME: 6:30PM – 11:00 PM
LOCATION: FORT YORK, Toronto

Come enjoy a fun evening with light finger foods, music, dancing,
and various fund raising activities. A brief presentation will be
made by Julian Smith from Willowbank.
There will be a cash bar.

What is the Per Neumeyer Fund?

The purpose of this evening is to raise enough money to establish
an endowment fund, whereby the annual interest will support a
student at the Willowbank School of Restoration Arts.

The school educates students in the field of restorative arts such as stone
carvers and restorers. Per Neumeyer was a respected and skilled
stone restorer and carver, whose innovative and intuitive way with
stone was admired. Per was generous with his knowledge not just
with the trades but with the entire conservation community.
Each year a student who exemplifies the spirit of Per Neumeyer
will be awarded a bursary. Our goal is to raise $10,000.

Tickets: $25/person
Tickets can be purchased at the door or prior to the event.
